I love everything about the cold weather that has moved in on us here in Arkansas. The fact that I can finally drink HOT coffee instead of a frappacino is a plus. I broke out my cute leather booties and we finally made our annual trip to the pumpkin patch. What is not to love about this beautiful time of year?? Oh, that’s right…the fact that my skin feels like it’s been on vacation in the Sahara desert!
I LIVE for skin care. When people see my skin care routine they think I’m one of those crazy old ladies who sell Mary Kay or something…but I’m normal, I swear. I just love beautiful skin! But, the winter/cold weather is the hardest time of the year to keep your skin healthy and radiating.
My friend, Lauren, from Reviews.com got in touch with me last week to tell me about this list her team had compiled with the help of 200 ( TWO HUNDRED!!!) dermatologists and aestheticians. We agreed that this time of year even puts the most beautiful skin to the test! Her team has made a fantastic list of what you want to look for (and want to avoid) in your moisturizer.
When Lauren shared this list for me I was so excited!! I decided it was time to compile my own list of ways to take care of your skin in the cold weather. From products, to tips, here are my thoughts on Cold Weather Skin Care:
Olay Complete Lotion Moisturizer (with SPF 15)
This lotion, this magical potion, has SAVED my face. This is by far my favorite product that I use. I use it in my morning routine, after I brush my teeth. This is my go-to moisturizer before I apply my makeup and after I take it off and go to sleep! It keeps my skin so hydrated, so soft, and it’s so lightweight. Olay has this one figured out. Now, let’s talk SPF.
I didn’t understand how extremely important it is to wear some type of Sun Protection on your face until I read a post from my favorite blog LemonStripes, The Importance of Sun Protection. I will let Julia take it from there. She was my inspiration for picking up this product.
You need this in your daily routine, especially with the dry weather. The SPF, the 24 hour moisturizer formula, and the fact you can throw this little bottle in your purse and take everywhere with you puts this baby on the top of my list.
This is the most important thing you can do at home for your skin. Exfoliation removes the dry skin on your body and nudges along the process of healthy skin repair. I recommend doing this simple task once a week. For my routine, I like to exfoliating my face every night and exfoliate my body in the shower about three times a week. When exfoliating my body I use special exfoliating mitts in the shower that help make the process a lot easier! I just scrub down with my favorite body buffer. After exfoliating, I always apply a good moisturizer.
Over Night Moisturizing
I’ll be honest, I don’t do this often just because when I’m ready for bed…I’m ready for bed. I want to crawl in my pajamas, snuggle up to the husband, and crash. Our hectic schedule keeps me going so at the end of the day I’m just ready for a good night sleep. But on the occasion, my favorite over night thing to do are my little feet! I slather on a tablespoon of coconut oil, pull on my Kate Spade socks, and call it a night. It’s like getting a pedicure in your sleep! The next morning, my feet are like baby toes!
DON’T crank the heat!
This may sound absolutely insane, given that its freezing outside! But when the thermostat is cranked on heat, the warm air dries out the air inside your home resulting in drying out your skin! Cuddle up with SO in your favorite pajamas and blanket and call it a night!
Give your face & hands extra love
My face and hands are notorious for being the driest! I love a good thick cream moisturizer for my hands and of course my Olay for my face. I like to keep both in my purse so I can apply them throughout the day.
Go to your Farmer’s Market
I promise this has is on topic…The fruits and veggies full of high-antioxidants are in season right now!! Your diet is what affects your skin the most overall. These all natural foods, my favorites are cranberries, pomegranate, and squash, will feed your skin from the inside out!
If you know me, you know I’m big on essential oils. I have my oil diffuser on about 3 times a day! I’ll be doing a review on how our essential oil use has benefited to our health soon. Here are a few blends to help combat dry skin:
- Rose Oil
- Jasmine Oil
- Frankincense oil
- Tea Tree oil
- Lavender oil
